Six years ago, fashion writer Harling Ross Anton ignited a trend with a simple Instagram post, where she noted her go-to styling hack of winter 2018 was to dress like a “stick of butter”. Suddenly the dreamy almost-pastel hue that lands somewhere between canary and beige was the colour of the moment, thrust into the sartorial spotlight as fashion editors and it-girls posted images of themselves in their “stick of butter” inspired-looks.
Like many internet trends, butter yellow eventually faded as new colours took over – Barbie pink, brat green, and oxblood red have each had their moment in the last 12 months. However, butter yellow is making a notable comeback this season. The spring/summer 2024 runways are showcasing this nostalgic hue, with prominent appearances from Bottega Veneta, Bally, and Louis Vuitton.
InStyle Australia fashion editor Annie Doig notes, “Yellow can be divisive, but this softer shade is surprisingly wearable and ready-made for spring. It embodies warmth and offers a sophisticated way to embrace colour.” For expert tips on incorporating this trend into your wardrobe, and the pieces to shop at the QVB, read on.
“I love this light, luxurious knit and think it’s such a great way to play with texture. Tie it loosely around your shoulders for an old money aesthetic and pair it with other butter yellow accessories for maximum impact.”
“A glamorous way to inject your everyday with a soft glow, these earrings have a lot of old Hollywood allure.”
“Onitsuka Tigers have become such an it sneaker and this one-tone is a great way to incorporate butter yellow into your look in a cool, understated way. Make them the focal point of your outfit by pairing them with denim and a navy or white t-shirt.”
“This bikini is perfect for spring and will look so gorgeous under a semi-sheer flowy white dress.”
“If you’re a minimalist who typically stays away from colour, start slow by working a sweatshirt, like this classic Country Road style, into your casual athleisure outfit.”
