We’re delighted to welcome a beautiful new piano to Level 1 of the Queen Victoria Building, generously donated by the not-for-profit organisation Concerts for All.
This new addition continues the QVB’s tradition of bringing music into the heart of Sydney, offering a space where visitors can pause, play, and enjoy the timeless beauty of live piano music.
The piano was donated by Concerts for All, an organisation dedicated to making classical music accessible to children and families across Sydney. We worked closely with their director, Yichao Ma, to bring this project to life.
As described in their “Who We Are” statement:
“We focus on bringing regular, high-quality, and accessible classical concerts to children and families across Sydney while addressing the current gap in music education—with a focus on music listening and appreciation.
From families discovering classical music for the first time to young musicians developing their craft, we create welcoming spaces where music can be experienced, understood, and enjoyed. Through our concerts, listening programs and educational initiatives, we aim to inspire deeper musical appreciation, encouraging more people to engage with classical music, learn instruments and develop their musicality from an early age.”
We’re proud to support their mission and provide a space where music can be shared freely with the community.
The original piano, which had become a beloved fixture of the QVB. While we’re unsure whether it was donated or purchased, we believe it was placed in the building during the 1980s following the restoration of the QVB.
This piano has now found a new purpose through Pianos for the People, a not-for-profit organisation that rehomes unwanted pianos to public spaces where communities can enjoy them. The piano is currently in storage while a final location is being determined.
We’re grateful for the many years of music and joy the original piano brought to our visitors and excited for its next chapter.
The Piano is located on Level 1 next to the dome.
