The Queen Victoria Building, a jewel nestled in the heart of Sydney, stands as testament to a rich history, elegantly preserved through its Heritage-listed status. This iconic structure, with its grandeur and historical significance, becomes even more enchanting after hours, when the softly-lit sandstone resembles Hogwarts’ Great Hall.

Among the many intriguing tales associated with the QVB is the legend of its resident spirit. According to local lore, a ghostly presence roams the building’s hallowed halls, often seen pacing the floors and circling the majestic central dome. This spectral figure is believed to be none other than Mei Quong Tart, a beloved character whose tragic fate adds a layer of poignancy to the building's history.

Mei Quong Tart’s story is as captivating as it is sorrowful. Arriving in Australia from China as a young boy in 1859, Tart's journey was one of remarkable achievement. After working at the goldfields and serving as a government interpreter, he made his mark in Sydney’s tea and silk trade and opened several esteemed restaurants across the city. His most renowned establishment, the Elite Dining Hall and Tea Rooms within the QVB, was a beacon of hospitality and progressive values.

Tart was well-regarded for his fair treatment of employees and his commitment to providing a safe space for women during a time of significant social change. His murder, a grim and tragic event that occurred when he was brutally attacked and robbed, shocked the community. Though he initially survived the assault, he succumbed to his injuries eleven months later.

Though there are no recent records of an official sighting, should you find yourself encountering a ghostly presence this spooky season, a friendly wave back is warmly encouraged.
